Bare feet or boots

Never wear shoes in a rice paddy – you will either lose them to the sludge that swallows your shins and smothers your knees, or they will be so brown and so wet when you leave, that you’ll wish you had just left them behind. Mike and I went into the fields to take a Khuong’s photo. She works in a small square of wild green rice all day, every day, and sleeps nearby at night. But Khuong does not own her field. “I rent it,” she says. “You should wear wellington boots in here, there will be leeches on your toes.”
